For drivers
What documents you need
CDL and non-CDL drivers need slightly different documents.
Any current (unexpired) U.S. government photo ID works: a driver's license or commercial driver's license, a state ID card, a U.S. passport or passport card, a green card (permanent resident card), or a work-authorization card (EAD). You pick which one you're using at the start.
For a passport book you only photograph the photo page. For everything else you photograph the front and the back.
Commercial license? The system reads the class right off it — no questions asked. It then offers a spot for your DOT medical examiner's certificate (medical card). Add it then, or continue without it and a person finishes the review — a CDL can't be fully approved without the card.
Photo tips: lay the document flat near a window, fill the frame, avoid glare, and keep all four corners visible. Blurry photos are the number one reason a check doesn't pass on the first try.
The name on your document should match the name on your account. Small differences — accents, two surnames, a middle name, a married name — don't fail you automatically; a person takes a look instead.
